The South Moravian Region offers a wide range of schools of all types of education with diverse specializations. The leading position among secondary study and apprenticeship programmes is taken by engineering, electrical engineering and information technology. There are 12 universities and colleges in the South Moravian Region attended by nearly 70,000 students. Brno is the second largest centre of education in the Czech Republic and it is also home to major research institutions, including the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The most important universities in Brno are: Masaryk University has been the most desirable university in the Czech Republic providing university education in a broad range of traditional and modern university disciplines for several years. Currently it comprises nine schools with more than 200 departments, institutes and clinics. Since its establishment, Masaryk University has been associated with the name of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk for whose personality, democratic and moral principles, contribution to politics, philosophy and sociology the Czech nation still feels respect today. Brno University of Technology is the oldest university in Moravia. Brno University of Technology is an internationally recognized educational institution offering contemporary scientific and expert knowledge at eight schools and the Institute of Forensic Engineering in a wide range of disciplines ranging from engineering, science, economy to art programmes. Mendel University in Brno is the oldest university-level agricultural school in the Czech lands which proudly claims the scientific heritage of the abbot of the Augustinian monastery in Brno, Gregor Johann Mendel (1822-1884), the founder of the science of heredity - genetics, and tries to develop it further. The university consists of five schools and the Institute of Lifelong Learning. The university research programme follows the current trends in the development of scientific disciplines and their application in practice. University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno has three schools. The mission of the University is to provide university-level education, perform scientific, research, development and other creative activities in the fields of veterinary medicine, veterinary hygiene, ecology and pharmacy based on the latest scientific knowledge.
