Přemysl Otakar II granted the original lordly castle, which had been guarding the borderline to the Liechtenstein estate in 1249. Cardinal Franz von Dietrichstein started rebuilding the plain castle fortress into a representative Renaissance princely residence appropriate for the ruler of Moravia at that time, and Mikulov owes him some of its picturesque beauty and elegance. In 1945 during the full retreat of the German army the chateau was burnt down. It was reconstructed thanks to the Union for Renewal of Mikulov Chateau and became a museum in 1959.
