The first preserved mentions of Křtiny are from the year 1237, but its history reaches all the way to the 9th century when Cyril and Methodius arrived in the country. According to old legends these Byzantine missionaries together with their pupils baptized the Moravians in the local valley. That is where the ancient name "Vallis Baptismi – Valley of Baptism – Křtiny" comes from. The tradition says that in 1210 the Virgin Mary Křtinská appeared in nearby Bukovinka on top of a blossoming chestnut tree. The small town of Křtiny belongs among the oldest places of pilgrimage.
